SOCIETY OF SOCIAL PSYCHIATRY AND MENTAL HEALTH
DAY CENTRE FOR PSYCHOLOGICAL SUPPORT OF CANCER PATIENTS
The Day Centre for Psychological Support of Cancer Patients is in operation since November 2003, in the context of the Society of Social Psychiatry and Mental Health, which is an non-profit scientific association and contributed significantly in the Psychiatric Reform since 1981 in Greece.
The number of cancer incidents is constantly increasing in Greece as in all over the World. The statistics in Greece count that about 35.000 new cancer incidents are being reported every year. A great percentage of the above mentioned cancer incidents (about 30%) seem to develop psychiatric symptoms, like depression adjustment and anxiety disorder, as a result of suffering from cancer.
The Day Centre for Psychological Support of Cancer Patients addresses to cancer patients who need psychological support at the same time with their medical care in order to cope with the changes and difficulties that cancer brings about. The Day Centre is also concerned with the needs of the patients’ family members and close relatives and especially their children, who seem to be mentally affected by the medical situation and need psychological support.
The Day Centre occupies a variety of mental health specialists like psychiatrists, psychologists (with psychodynamic approach), and dance therapists.
Aims of the Day Centre
The Day Centre is funded by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.
